to being acquired by Verizon Wireless, Alltel was the 5th largest wireless
provider in the US with over 13 million subscribers as of 2008. The company
is focused on providing wireless coverage for small and medium towns,
although it also provides national coverage through low cost roaming agreements
with larger providers.
In January 2009 Verizon Wireless acquired AllTel and became the largest US wireless carrier.
Technology and roaming
Alltel operates mostly on the 800 MHz band and has roaming agreements with Verizon Wireless and Nextel.
