Reviews » Vonage Internet phone service

Vonage is a New Jersey based, publicly traded company ranking 2nd among Voice over IP telephone service providers in the United States. Vonage stands for 'Voice-Over-Net-AGE'. According to their corporate website the number of subscribers using their Internet phone service is 2.6 million as of June 2008. The service is available to customers from the US, Canada and the UK.

This is obviously the most popular Internet phone service in America. What makes it popular? Is it the quality service? Or is it the agressive advertising? I'd say it's a little bit of both: while Vonage adverts are certainly everywhere, the general opinion is that they provide quality service.

International calls

An option not available with many VoIP companies is the unlimited international calling feature. With the new $24.99 plan you can place unlimited calls to over 60 countries including some of the most called destinations such as India or Mexico.

Fees

There is a cancellation fee of $39.99 if you cancel your Vonage service before your 2 year contract ends. Also, I have read in some online opinion forums that cancelling service (done by phone only) can be a real pain due to long holding times.

Vonage customer reviews

I don't know why this service is so popular. I had Vonage for about a year, and although I don't have any complaints about the service quality, I must say that there are other smaller VoIP companies providing the same quality calls and much better support.

I pretty much can say that Vonage has succesfully replaced my old LD provider. I had some issues a few months ago when my Internet connection was down and couldn't receive any calls for over 6 hours. These are rare occurences though and the low cost of Voip is worth it in my opinion.
